Is Sandy Alderson the Right GM to Lead the Mets Back to Relevance?

Sandy Alderson has just completed his second year on the job as General Manager of the New York Mets.  As Met fans, we have to ask ourselves whether or not this team has improved under Alderson’s leadership.  The last two seasons, the Mets have been awful.  Granted, he inherited a team with major flaws….or did he?  Clearly, the team was saddled with crippling contracts (Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez), but as we’re learning…Omar Minaya left the minor league system in better shape than anyone originally thought possible.  The fact is, many of their talented minor leaguers were buried because Minaya would sign washed up veteran players, and stockpile them at AAA, retarding the entire system.  The talent was there…but hidden. Ownership controversy, unwise free agent signings, and a weak farm system have all been emblematic of the recent struggles of the New York Mets. Playing in the largest market in America, the Mets have been stuck in a rut of mediocrity, unable to match the success and popularity of the cross-town Yankees. The system still has a ways to go but it has some exciting arms at the top and some upside picks from the 2011 draft.
